DLT, explained in plain words.
If you have ever wondered why your SMS “did not go”, this is usually why. Here is what the rule is, what you need, and how we can do it for you.
What it is
Since 2019, TRAI requires every business that sends SMS in India to register on a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform run by the mobile operators. Three things get registered:
- Your business, as a Principal Entity. You get a 19-digit PE ID.
- Your sender ID, the 6-letter name that appears as the sender, such as ORIONX.
- Your templates, the exact wording of each message, with blanks for things that change.
When a message is sent, the operator checks all three. If the sender ID is not yours or the words do not match a template, the message is dropped and nobody is told. This is the single most common reason business SMS fails in India.
What a template looks like
Dear {#var#}, your appointment with Dr. {#var#} is confirmed for {#var#} at {#var#}. Reply CANCEL to cancel. – Shanti Clinic
Each {#var#} can hold up to 30 characters. Everything else must match exactly, including the full stops. The business name at the end is required.
Template types
- Transactional and service: OTPs, confirmations, reminders, receipts to your own customers. No time limit.
- Promotional: offers and marketing. Only to numbers not on DND, only between 9 am and 9 pm.
The registration process
Register your business
On any one operator’s DLT portal (Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL) with GST or PAN, an authorisation letter and address proof. One registration works for all operators.
Get your PE ID
Approval takes 2–7 working days. You receive a 19-digit Principal Entity ID.
Register sender IDs
6 letters that relate to your business name. 1–3 working days.
Register templates
One per message type you send. Each is checked by the operator. 1–3 working days each.
Link the telemarketer
Add our upstream telemarketer ID in your portal so messages sent through OrionXConnect are recognised as yours.
Do it yourself
If you are comfortable with online portals, register directly and enter your PE ID, sender IDs and template IDs in your OrionXConnect account. We approve them the same working day. You will need:
- GST certificate, or PAN if you are not GST-registered
- A letter of authorisation on your letterhead (we provide the format)
- Address proof of the business
- Our telemarketer ID, shown in your account under DLT
Let us do it
For ₹1,499 one-time, we register your business, draft up to 5 templates and 2 sender IDs based on what you actually send, submit everything, chase approvals, and set it up in your account. You pay the operator’s portal fee directly (usually under ₹6,000 including GST, depending on the operator). Typical time: 5–10 working days.
Why templates get rejected
| Rejection | Usual cause | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Template rejected | No business name in the text, a link to an unregistered website, a variable that could hold more than 30 characters, marketing language in a transactional template | Use our template library; we review before submitting |
| Sender ID rejected | Looks like a brand you do not own, or too generic | Use an abbreviation of your registered business name |
| Message blocked after approval | Text differs from the template by a comma or space | OrionXConnect checks every message against the template before sending and shows you the difference |
| Promotional message not delivered | Recipient is on DND | Promotional messages cannot reach DND numbers. Use a transactional template for existing customers who have consented |
